We are making a number of changes to the way we organise junior training, in order to meet the recommended ratio of 1 coach to 12 athletes recommended by England Athletics and to provide an improved and more structured training experience for junior athletes.
From the 10th of October 2016 we will be introducing a waiting list for new junior athletes. Anyone who is already a paid up member will be unaffected by this change. Waiting times on the list will depend on the availability of places in the appropriate training group – meaning that waiting times will depend on both age group and specialism. In practice, we expect that the waiting list will only apply to junior athletes but the waiting list may also apply to older joiners, depending on the availability of training places in their chosen training group.
If you wish your child's name to be added to the waiting list, please e-mail their name, date of birth and contact details to the Junior Section Coaching Coordinator, Ashley Barton - email@example.com.
TRANSITION FROM JUNIOR TO SENIOR COACHING GROUPS
In future all athletes will transition from Junior (Monday/Wednesday) to Senior (Tuesday/Thursday) training nights at the start of Winter training following their second year as an under 13 boy or girl. We have introduced this change in order to improve the ratio of Junior athletes to coaches on Junior training nights and to provide a clearer transition point for junior athletes.
CHANGES TO JUNIOR TRAINING SESSIONS
We are making one further important change to Monday/Wednesday junior training nights. From November 14th, Monday evening training will be reserved for committed athletes. Commitment will be measured by regular attendance at training sessions and appearance at competitions (in an Oxford vest) the previous summer. We do not propose to introduce strict age criteria for the Monday evening sessions but we expect that selected athletes will largely be drawn from U9 athletes who are competing in Sportshall and Quadkids events and second-year-U11 and U13 athletes. The core Monday evening coaching team will comprise Denise Shorter, Wendy Fowler, Ashley Barton, Richard Hart and Mark Bristow. Wednesday evening training will remain open to all junior OCAC athletes. We will aim to coach around 90 athletes with seven coaches on Wednesday evenings. This change will be implemented from the 14th November 2016.

Athletics 365 forms the basis for junior training. It is a multi-event, young people development programme, which introduces athletes to the fundamental skills of athletics (vital to every sport). It is aimed predominantly at 8-15 year olds, but the resources can easily be adapted for use with younger athletes.
